How to get to Bari Sardo

Bari Sardo sits on the eastern coast of Sardinia, in Ogliastra. It is not the easiest corner of the island to reach — which is also why it has stayed as it is.

By air

Cagliari Elmas has the most flights year-round. From there it’s about two hours by car on the SS125 Orientale Sarda: scenic, but slow over the final fifty kilometres.

Olbia Costa Smeralda is two and a half hours away on the same road. It has plenty of seasonal international flights.

Tortolì-Arbatax is twenty minutes away, but its connections are limited and seasonal: worth checking, not worth counting on.

By ferry

The port of Arbatax is twenty-five minutes away, with sailings from Civitavecchia and Genoa. The crossing is long (ten to nineteen hours) but arriving with your own car changes the holiday, and with two or more people the cost comes close to flights plus baggage plus hire.

Other ports: Olbia two and a half hours, Cagliari two hours.

Do you need a car?

Yes. From the houses in town you can walk to shops, bakeries and restaurants, and from those near the marina to the beach as well. But for the rest of Ogliastra you need a car: intercity buses exist, run infrequently, and do not reach the coves.

If you’re hiring, book well ahead for July and August: in high season cars run out across Sardinia and prices double.

The last stretch

From every direction you arrive on the SS125. The Bari Sardo exit is signposted; from there it’s three kilometres to the town and five to the sea. Every house has parking or a space nearby — in the confirmation message we send the exact location and the key-collection instructions.
